Task 2

File Formats:

Types:
·         Vector
·         Bitmap
·         JPEG
·         GIF

Uses:
·         Vector - they use mathematical relationships between points and the paths connecting them to describe an image. Vector graphics are composed of paths.
·         Bitmap – The BMP format is a commonly used raster graphics format for saving image files. The BMP format stores colour data for each pixel in the image without any compression.
·         JPEG -
·         GIF

Advantages:
·         Vector - Drawings can be changed to any size with out loosing the quality of the Image and they do not take up a lot of disk space.
·         Bitmap - A bitmap image uses colour pixels which are solid and can be identified and recoloured easily.
·         JPEG – JPEG format can handle thousands or even millions of colours in an image and still keep file size to a minimum.
·         GIF – Graphics with this are typically small in size and therefore download and display faster, you can also make the background transparent so that the background colour of the website shows trough.

Disadvantages:
·         Vector – Graphics are not good for representing a detailed graphic, cannot be used to display photographs or similar complicated images.
·         Bitmap – Depends on context, but generally it’s a huge file size and therefore not particularly web-friendly.
·         JPEG – When an image is converted to JPEG, some of the information in the image is lost. Professional photographers tend to avoid working repeatedly with JPEG images as continually loading and saving the image causes the image to loose quality.
·         GIF - They can't be edited once they are encoded as an animated gif. If you do edit the gif, you will loose the animation sequence on save and they only support a 256 bit color palette.

File sizes:
·         The maximum file size that a file system will support depends on the number of bits reserved to the store size information and the total size of the file system.
